Schools Get Funding, Kids Get Educated

For years, the Washington State legislature pushed for the elimination of the super majority vote or 60% vote for passage of school levies. A referendum that was put to voters statewide in 2007 finally allowed school levies to be on par with how we elect candidates and pass initiatives and other levies (parks, fire districts, etc.).
Recently, the new system of a simple majority vote was put to a test. Twenty-three school levies were on the February 3rd ballot and ALL OF THEM PASSED! Voters have shown that despite the economy, education is still a priority for our children.
The election of Progressive Majority candidates gave the Washington State Legislature the votes needed to pass EHJR 4204 in 2007 putting the simple majority referendum on the ballot. The work of yesterday certainly paid off this week, and we look forward to seeing more progressive legislation pass in the coming days.
